William Brereton, c. / – 17 May , was a member of a prominent Cheshire family who served as a courtier to Henry May , Brereton was accused of committing adultery with Anne Boleyn, the king's second wife, and executed for treason along with her brother George Boleyn, Henry Norris, Francis Weston and a musician, Mark Smeaton.

Mark was born around 1512, which means he was only in his early twenties when his life was abruptly ended by the blow of an axe.
